COMPETE IN BURLINGTON’S FIRST-EVER NEW YORKER CARTOON CAPTION CONTEST!
So you want to know what happens behind the scenes at The New Yorker cartoon department? Here’s your chance. Take part in this special Festival contest on Friday, September 20 at Phoenix Books and submit your captions for drawings created by acclaimed New Yorker cartoonist and cover artist Harry Bliss.
Winning captions will be chosen by a panel of celebrity judges. If you can withstand the rejection, your submission may win you original cartoon art or signed copies of our cartoonists’ books. Aspiring comic artists- be sure to join us for this Burlington Book Festival Cartoon Caption Contest first! (Mostly an adult New Yorker reader event but kids are welcome, too.)
The Celebrity Judges
Josie Leavitt got her start in New York City, playing clubs like Caroline’s and Stand-Up New. Since moving to Vermont, Josie has performed all over the state. She has performed benefits for the Humane Society, Partners in Adventure, RU12, WBON, and more. As a stand-up comedy teacher, Josie has taught well over 250 comics in the last eight years and has been teaching incarcerated women for the past year. Josie also co-owns the Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne, VT and writes the Shelftalker blog for Publishers Weekly.
Jim Romanoff is a food writer for the Associated Press. He is the former Food Editor for EatingWell Magazine and has worked at a wide range of publications including Rolling Stone, Us Magazine, Details, The Village Voice, and Seven Days in New York. While he is procrastinating on his writing and editing deadlines, he spends his time thinking about what to make for dinner, what to do with that jar of stuff that’s been sitting in the loneliest part of the refrigerator, and flying small airplanes.
Kevin Byer is a stand-up comedian who recently moved to Burlington to settle down and start a family. He spent the last several years in New York and Los Angeles performing at famed venues such as The Comedy Store, Upright Citizens Brigade, New York Comedy Club, and The Broadway Comedy Club. Shortly after his arrival, he won the “Funniest Comic in Vermont” competition and has been having a blast in the VT comedy scene from the bars and clubs of Burlington to the upstairs of barns in the Northeast Kingdom.
